The European Society of Intensive Care Medicine is an association of individual persons. The objective of the ESICM is the advancement and promotion of knowledge in intensive care medicine.
ESICM and ESPNIC are sharing the same interest in adult and paediatric intensive care medicine.

The ESICM will endeavour to realize this objective by
a) promotion and co-ordination of activities in the different fields of
    intensive care medicine
b) fostering research and education in these fields
c) providing recommendations for optimizing facilities for intensive
    care medicine in Europe
d) organization and co-ordination of international congresses and meetings.

The ESICM was founded in March 1982 in Geneva, Switzerland. It is a non-profit making international association. The administrative secretariat has been based in Brussels, Belgium since 1988.
